How do I renew my real estate license in Texas?

Texas real estate licenses are renewed through the Texas Real Estate Commission every two years, and the continuing education requirement is 18 hours. Those 18 hours are not a free choice: TREC fixes most of the composition, and the parts have to be the right parts.

If you are a broker or designated broker who sponsors sales agents, or a delegated supervisor, TREC requires the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course as part of your 18 hours. We do not offer that course, so this will not complete your renewal on its own. Take Broker Responsibility from another approved provider.

The one that catches brokers

If you are a broker or designated broker who sponsors sales agents, or you are a delegated supervisor, TREC requires its 6-hour Broker Responsibility course inside your 18. It is not an extra six hours on top; it occupies six of the eighteen.

We do not offer that course. So if you are in that group, nothing on this site completes your renewal on its own, and you need Broker Responsibility from another approved provider. If you are a sales agent, or a broker who does not sponsor anyone, this does not apply to you.

The contract hours have been mandatory since February 2021

Three of the 18 have to be contract-related coursework. That became a requirement on 1 February 2021, so anyone whose mental model of the 18 hours predates that is working from an old split.

Your first renewal is a different requirement

A sales agent renewing for the first time does not take this 18-hour CE requirement. The first renewal is governed by Salesperson Apprentice Education, which is a separate and much larger block of coursework. The 18 hours described here apply from your second renewal onward.

How the hours are reported

Your provider posts your completion to your license record. You can confirm it yourself in TREC's License Holder Search, and that is worth doing before you submit the renewal. TREC does not publish a numeric deadline for provider reporting, so we do not claim one.

The renewal itself

  1. Complete the right 18 hours. The 18-hour bundle is all four parts in one purchase, or take them separately: Legal Update I and II, the three contract hours, and the seven elective hours.
  2. Check the hours posted in TREC's License Holder Search.
  3. Renew in TREC's online system and pay the current fee, which TREC publishes.
  4. Keep your certificates in case you are audited.
